SAT-3 reinforces market monopolies in Africa - Study

Ownership of the SAT-3 cable by telecoms incumbents in Africa has reinforced their market positions, APC study finds.

Who are SAT3’s members?

SAT3 has a total of 36 members along its full route and of these 12 are Africa members. Travelling the fibre from Portugal to India, they are:

Senegal (Sonatel);
Côte d’Ivoire (Côte d’Ivoire Telecom);
Ghana (Ghana Telecom);
Benin (OPT);
Nigeria (Nitel);
Cameroon (Camtel);
Gabon Telecom (Gabon Telecom);
Angola (Angola Telecom);
South Africa (Telkom);
La Reunion (France Telecom);
Mauritius (Mauritius Telecom) and
Namibia (Telecom Namibia).

The managing agent for the African section of the cable is South Africa’s Telkom.
